Construction of the Galerie de la Madeleine

The opening of the Galerie de la Madeleine is linked to that of the Place de la Madeleine and the construction of its church.
The Passage Jouffroy company acquires the land located at the corner of Rue Boissy d’Anglas.

Begun in 1840 and completed in 1845, it was inaugurated in 1846, following the enlargement of the Place de la Madeleine.

The architect and Art Nouveau

Designed by architect Théodore Charpentier, this monumental building stands out from earlier works.

The two façades are very different: on the Madeleine side, two magnificent Klagman caryatids frame the beautiful canopy of the main entrance overlooking the Place de la Madeleine. On the Rue Boissy-d’Anglas side, the 1700 building blends into the gallery: the rounded arch harmonizes with the fine double wooden façade, featuring carved woodwork and forming a loggia at the end of the gallery, dating back to its origins.

The glass roof, divided into panels, is supported by elegant buttresses. The gallery is a must-see passage in the neighborhood.

Chic and elegant

The Galerie de la Madeleine shines with its refined ambiance. It offers numerous luxury addresses (fashion and accessories). Luxury for the palate as well, with the Lucas Carton restaurant, which serves delicate cuisine (entrance on Place de la Madeleine), and its little sibling, Le Petit Lucas Carton, whose entrance is located within the gallery itself.

Here are the luxury boutiques in the Galerie de la Madeleine: Blanc et Vert (Café Restaurant), Giambattista Valli (Haute Couture), InLuce (Visual Merchandising Agency), La Golconde (Jewelry), Le Petit Lucas (Restaurant, subsidiary of Lucas-Carton), TNC PARIS (Accessories Boutique), Yves Delorme (Home Linen).

The most famous establishment was undoubtedly the Lucas-Carton restaurant, located at the entrance on the Place de la Madeleine side. It features an exceptional Art Nouveau decor, attributed to Louis Majorelle and designed by Étienne de Gournevitch between 1904 and 1905.

Despite its exceptional location, the Galerie de la Madeleine has never achieved fame.

Notable figures who lived at this address

Jean Cocteau lived at 9, Place de la Madeleine, with Jean Marais, in the spring of 1938.
