Dagobert, King of the Franks (629–639), came here to hunt bears, deer, and all manner of game among the oaks that once thrived in the forest.

Today, with its 846 hectares—two and a half times the size of New York’s Central Park—this iconic park is far more than just a green space. It’s an urban escape, a place for relaxation, sports, and culture.

Located in the 16th arrondissement of Paris, the Bois de Boulogne stretches between the residential districts of Neuilly-sur-Seine, Boulogne-Billancourt, and the Seine. Its strategic location makes it an easily accessible destination by public transport, bike, or car.

To get there by metro, take lines 1 (Porte Maillot or Les Sablons), 9 (Pont de Sèvres), or 10 (Boulogne – Pont de Saint-Cloud).

Buses 43, 73, 82, 174, and 244 also serve the park’s surroundings. If you prefer cycling, bike lanes and Vélib’ stations are available nearby. Finally, for drivers, several parking lots are scattered at the main entrances.

The park is open 24/7, though some areas, such as gardens or lakes, close at nightfall. Plan your visit accordingly to fully enjoy its treasures.

History and origins: from royal hunting grounds to a democratic park

The Bois de Boulogne takes its name from the Notre-Dame-de-Boulogne church, built in the 14th century by Philip IV of France. It was a tribute to a pilgrimage made to Boulogne-sur-Mer.

Originally, these lands were a vast forest of oaks and beeches, reserved for royal hunts as early as the Middle Ages. François Ier had the Château de Madrid (now vanished) built here, while Louis XIV organized lavish hunting parties.

Under Napoléon III, the woods were completely redesigned by engineer Jean-Charles Alphand and landscape architect Jean-Pierre Barillet-Deschamps. This was part of the grand Haussmannian works.

Inspired by English parks, the project transformed the site into a modern public space, featuring artificial lakes, waterfalls, and winding paths.

Inaugurated in 1858, the Bois de Boulogne became Paris’s first democratic park, open to all.

Today, it embodies the legacy of that era. Yet it continues to evolve to meet the needs of Parisians and visitors alike. Its rich history makes it a place steeped in symbolism, where every trail tells a chapter of the past.

Hydraulic network and landscaping: a paradise for nature lovers

The Bois is a masterpiece of hydraulic engineering.
