The “Walk Pigalle to Sacré-Coeur by south of Montmartre Hill” takes you to the top of the Butte Montmartre, in an environment historically well documented since the 11th century.
The hill of Montmartre lies 1.5 km north of the Ile de la Cité and Notre Dame, the historic center of Paris.
This 2 km walk starts in the Pigalle district, at the foot of Montmartre hill – exactly at the “Musée de la Vie romantique“. to pass 200 m away in front of Moulin Rouge Cabaret – It lasts around 2 h and ends at Place du Tertre.
You will see the Sacré-Coeur Basilica, the superb view of Paris from the Parvis du Sacré-Coeur, the Place du Tertre and its painters and also 14 other “Points d’Intérêt“. This is deliberate: you’ll learn more about Montmartre than on an ordinary tour. What’s more, we’ve added 18 “Relaxation Breaks” along the route, at merchants renowned for the quality of their service and the moderation of their prices to tourists.
This Walk Pigalle to Sacré-Coeur includes climbs. But if you take the walk in the other direction, from Place du Tertre to Pigalle, it's all downhill.
We offer 4 possible choices to make it as easy as possible for you. This walk let you choose between 4 alternatives: walk up by the stairs if you're in shape, take the Petit Train, or the 40 RATP bus and finally the funicular. What you also need to know is that private car traffic is only partially permitted on the Butte, due to the slope, the narrow streets and the influx of visitors. In fact, the project currently under study by the Town Hall of Paris, calls for a total ban on traffic on the Butte in 2024, for the Olympic Games. See the starting options on the map.
This walk can be taken from Pigalle (Museum of the Romantics – George Sand, Ary Scheffer, Ernest Renan) towards the Place du Tertre or the other way around, “going down” from the Place du Tertre towards Pigalle.
You can also show on the map where you are in Paris at any time. You just have to click on one of the buttons in the dialog column on the left-hand side of the map ("Centrer la carte sur votre position" - "Centre the map on your present location"). Use the zoom button at the top of this left column to make easier the reading of the street names. You ca use this function to locate your hotel wwhen you leave it, to guide you reach the address of the starting point of the walk, or to follow the progress of your walk.
