Galeries Lafayette terrace transformed into a landing pad

On January 19, 1919, aviator Jules Védrines succeeded in landing "Caudron G III" plane on the roof of Galeries Lafayette, with only little damages. The event was the brainchild of the department store's founders and despite a ban from the Paris prefecture. One of the greatest feats of aeronautics. The track was only 28 m long and 12 m wide. After repairing the plane, he took off again from the terrace to return to his starting field at Issy-les-Moulineaux. This second feat was child's play for Védrines, whose specialty during the 1st world war was dropping off and picking up passengers behind German lines (he made 53 such expeditions), in unimaginable conditions.

Jules Védrines pocketed the 25,000-franc prize offered for this feat, but was fined 16 francs by the police. It would appear that this sum will represent 2,984,697.68 Euros in 2023. The fine would amount to 2,387.76 Euros. A stele commemorates the event on the terrasse.

But death was waiting for him. Three months later, on April 21, 1919, during the inaugural flight of the Paris-Rome route aboard a twin-engine Caudron C-23, one of the plane's two engines failed and it crashed at Saint-Rambert-d'Albon (near Valence -France). Jules Védrines and his mechanic Guillain did not survive. He is buried in the Parisian Pantin cemetery with great pomp and ceremony.
