Full description
Charlemagne et ses Leudes is a statue located on the Parvis Notre-Dame - Place Jean-Paul-II, in the 4th arrondissement of Paris, France. It is the work of French sculptor brothers Charles Rochet and Louis Rochet and art foundry Thiébaut Frères.
The monument is a bronze statue on a pedestal depicting Charlemagne on horseback, accompanied by the leudes Roland and Olivier.
Proposed in 1853, the statue was presented in plaster at the 1867 Universal Exhibition and in bronze at the 1878 Universal Exhibition.
The Thiébaut Frères foundry came up with a stratagem, offering to install the statue at its own expense for three years, in the hope that the Paris municipality would eventually buy it. The statue was nevertheless chosen and inaugurated on July 14, 1882, before finally being acquired by the city in 1896.
The statue was preserved during the German occupation because of Charlemagne's importance in German history.
