A steep cemetery with a confidential character

The Saint-Vincent Cemetery is a small cemetery (900 graves) hidden at the bottom of the Montmartre hill (north side of the 18th arrondissement), which offers a pleasant walk, in a quiet and original way the unique atmosphere of the Parisian cemeteries.

It is built on the slope which gives a nice perspective on the Dome of the Sacred Heart. The charm of its flowered alleys will seize you as soon as you enter.

You will discover among others some personalities buried in this cemetery. Among the most famous are Marcel Aymé, Marcel Carné or Maurice Utrillo.

The cemetery offers beautiful Restoration style graves of great Montmartre families, such as Tourlaque, Labat, Muller, Lavigne, Cottin, Lécuyer, Nicolet or Picard. Most of their graves are lined up along the main avenue, in the 11th division.

At the beginning of the 1900s, it was the divisions located closest to the new entrance at 6 rue Lucien-Gaulard (the old one was on rue Saint-Vincent), in the lower part, along avenue Caulaincourt, that seemed to attract the concessionaires (7th, 8th and 9th divisions). This is where most of the statuary is found.

Before 1989-1990, 117 robinieres had shaded the Saint-Vincent cemetery for several decades. They had to be replaced by 124 healthy trees of 17 different species, including many small cypresses with yellow flowers in clusters.
