The House of Fragonard since 1926 in Grasse (French Riviera)
Founded in 1926, Fragonard Perfumes is a family-run House with unique French traditional know-how. Fragonard of Perfumes is one of the oldest perfumeries in Grasse (Côte d'Azur, France). It is located at 20, boulevard Fragonard.
Founded by a former Parisian notary, Eugène Fuchs, it has since been housed in one of the town's oldest factories, built by perfumer Claude Mottet in 1841.
It is named after the great local painter Jean-Honoré Fragonard (born April 5, 1732 in Grasse, died August 22, 1806 in Paris), himself the son of a master glove-maker and court perfumer.
Fragonard- Parfums opened its first Paris boutique in 1936 at 9 rue Scribe, after launching two successful perfumes.
The company owns the Fragonard Museum of Perfumes (Paris), a free museum displaying rare objects evoking the history of perfumery going back over 5,000 years. You can, of course, buy the brand's perfumes upstairs.
Just 20 meters away, Maison Fragonard has also opened a store dedicated to art and fashion.
The company is owned by the descendants of Eugène Fuchs, the Costa family, who control 100% of Maison Fragonard through the Costa finance company.
The Fragonard Museum of Perfumes at 9 rue Scribe
The Fragonard Museum of Perfumes, located at 9 rue Scribe, was the first to open in Paris, in 1983. After months of renovation and expansion, it now houses a collection enriched by numerous acquisitions.
The Parfumerie Fragonard showcases all the secrets of perfume production: raw materials, harvesting, extraction, distillation, formulation, industrialization, bottling and, of course, the creative process and the "métier de nez".
Then, in the second part of the museum, an exceptional collection of antique bottles traces the history of perfume from ancient Egypt to the 20th century: kohl pots, pomanders, vinaigrettes, perfume burners, potpourris, travel boxes, salt bottles, precious bottles...
Recent additions by Françoise Costa, unusual, rare and precious, add to an already comprehensive collection, which also includes curiosities such as a civet, a trebuchet and objects used in the production and extraction of perfume plants. A Grasse perfumer since 1926,
Fragonard shares its centuries-old expertise and unique heritage with visitors, telling the story of perfume from its origins to the present day.
Organization of the Fragonard Museum of Perfumes
The raw materials
Set up in the spirit of a cabinet of curiosities, the exhibits in this first area evoke the history of the perfume laboratory. The showcase features objects used in the past: pharmacy jars, maps, engravings, animal matter, measuring instruments and botanical plates.
In addition, an interactive map takes visitors on an olfactory voyage around the five continents to discover the most emblematic perfume flowers: osmanthus from China, bergamot from Italy, sandalwood from Australia, etc.
The stills room
The atmosphere here is that of an early 20th-century perfume factory. Stills, old photos and archive and recent films retrace the different stages in perfume production. They bear witness to the evolution of the trade over the last hundred years.
Modernized and mechanized, the gestures remain the same. The men who grow, pick, select, blend and bottle these precious juices.
The nose
The nose is at the heart of the perfumer's craft. Magician, artist, chemist, the perfumer calls on all his talents to compose a perfume. He possesses unique know-how and develops his own olfactory signature. Often compared to a work of art, creating a perfume takes months, sometimes years.
A creator by nature, the art of the nose is to know how to innovate, smell and transcribe the spirit of the times.
The collections
The Musée Fragonard exhibits rare pieces from Antiquity to the 20th century. It's an exceptional collection of art objects linked to perfumery.
Throughout the ages and trends, perfume has always been found in three states: liquid, solid and vaporous.
The collections reflect, in chronological and historical order, these different aspects of perfume and its various uses. Begun by Jean-François Costa in the 1950s, the collection is constantly expanding under the impetus of the company's current directors.
The olfaction room
This room is dedicated to temporary exhibitions and to "our flower of the year". Here, visitors can play the olfaction game and hone their sense of smell. Test your nose!
The perfumer's workshop
This is the scent laboratory, where the Apprentice Perfumers meet. Open to all aged 12 and over, with a fee and booking required, from 35 minutes to 2 hours depending on the workshop. The secrets of fragrance creation.
The Boutiques of the Fragonard Museum of Perfumes
Above the museum at 9 rue Scribe, the boutique offers the full range of Fragonard fragrances: perfumes, eaux de toilette, soaps, candles, diffusers, cosmetics, shower gels and gift sets.
The Fragonard offer is particularly rich and varied: floral, fruity, chypre, woody or oriental, a wonderful way to extend your visit by discovering all the olfactory families and find the perfume perfectly suited to your personality, tastes and desires.
The second Boutique Fragonard for the Fragonard Collections dedicated to lifestyle, decoration, fashion and accessories can be found in a neighboring boutique at 5 rue Boudreau, Paris 9e (20 meters from the museum).
